Some pips from back when I was a pip hound

MarFisk's History

I haven't been a pip hound for a while, mainly because my sig got too heavy to manage, but I may start collecting them again for here . However, here is an annotated list of my pips up to the beginning of 2006 that some might find interesting.

Pips and Progress

Pip Description
This pip is awarded to those who make the transition from QWERTY to Dvorak keyboard layouts. For more information on Dvorak, this site is a good resource: http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/
Not Saving the World. This pip came from an article by Holly Lisle in which she expressed an opposition to novels that attempt to save the world, not the fictional one, but the real one. While I have no problem with thought-provoking fiction, to think a book can make the world a better place is shortsighted for two reasons. 1) The author assumes ownership of THE answer. 2) The author forgets the reader brings 50% to the table so what the reader walks away with may be different than what the author intended.
Super Literary Masochist means that I am looking for critiques that delve to the heart of the matter and don't spare my feelings in favor of improving the work
This pip designates someone who likes to participate in mad scrambles for words in the Forward Motion chat rooms.
Extreme writer participates in marathons and other writing challenges.
This pip flag is for participation as a student or teacher in the Forward Motion Back to School classes. The numbers change as new classes are completed. As a student, completion means all classes are read, and the class assignment is turned in and approved by the teacher.
Each of these indicate the completion of at least one Forward Motion dare during a dare period. See the Writing Progress pages for more information on my dare activity.

Awarded for completion of 20 short stories during the month-long Story A Day challenge in 2003
Awarded for the Retelling the Tale challenge where we critiqued a Guy de Maupassant tale, wrote one inspired by it and critiqued someone else's crit.
Wrote and submitted a young adult short story for a challenge in 2003.
For writing at least 500 words inspired by a Zettercise writing exercise. I used 14 Zettercises and wrote several short stories.
Haiku and Tanka challenge. I completed 60 Haiku.
Researched 30 short story markets for this challenge. The work later transformed into a bimonthly column for Vision: the Mar's Market Report.
For completing a loose end from the year. In my case, I completed the first round edit of Heart's Promise
Another Haiku challenge. Finished 50 for this one.

The Outline challenge. Designed primarily for novels, this challenge is to create, or expand, an outline. I completed 50 scenes three times.

Awarded for completion of 15 short stories during the month-long Story A Day challenge in 2004
Labor of Love 2003: I started the novel Kyrnie and achieved 31,352 words
National Novel Writing Month: Awarded for writing a complete novel in November 2003. This was Trina (at 116k) which later became Shafter and is currently out at agents. The smaller pips are for related challenges.

National Novel Writing Month: Awarded for writing a complete novel in November 2004. This was The Key That Must (at 98k). The smaller pips are for related challenges.

National Novel Writing Month: Awarded for writing a complete novel in November 2005. This was The Demon Rules (at 51k). The smaller pips are for related challenges.
Unfinished Business/Labor of Love 2004 three-day novel challenge. For adding 30k to an existing novel (What You See)
Book In A Week 2004 challenge. Added 20K to What You See and finish the novel.

March Madness 2003: A challenge to complete 40k in 7 days. I managed 40192.
Challenge to write a scene showing romantic interpersonal conflict for February 2004. This ended up as a romance, The Heart of the Crystal.
Wrote and submitted a young adult short story for a challenge in March 2004.
March Madness 2004: A challenge to complete 40k in 7 days. I managed 40,162 on Heart of the Crystal.
A pre-NaNo challenge in 2004 and the first of the Fifth-Wheel Marathons designed to complete any last minute world building for NaNo.
This flag is for critiques made on or through the Forward Motion site. At this time I have completed over 200 such critiques.
This pip is for completing 100 or more short stories
Indicates that I have sold two short stories.
Indicates I have completed 10 novels.
Indicates I have received over 100 rejection letters. While this may not seem to be something to display, it means I'm getting my stories out there and read. You cannot become published if you don't submit.
Indicates I have been published in Vision several times.
Indicates I complete the annual word count challenge with more than 500k.

These flags mark the word count I achieved in word count marathons throughout the year on the flag. Each dot signifies 5k, so a three dot line is 15k.

These flags mark the word count I edited in edit marathons throughout the year on the flag.
These flags mark levels achieved in special marathons run on the fifth week in a month. They are:
Character Building
Market to Market
Synopses
For completing the February 2005 Romance Dare
For completing 35,046 in the last week of March 2005.
10 short stories completed for May Story A Day challenge.

Thank you. I spelled it one way and then the other about 10 times and then just went with it. It would have been faster to run it through a spell check, but if I'd had the brain to do that, I probably would have recognized the right spelling...which was of course the first one I put, not the last :p. (Umm, and with an o it still looks wrong cause I read the lions .)
