When I wrote the above, I thought the Autogyro had flown away with the drift of history. Not so. They are being built and used, mainly as a sports vehicle. There are videos of modern Autogyros and Gyrocoptors flying, and they look like fun machines. Much cheaper than a helicoptor. The rotors are not powered, but are driven with the movement of the craft and provide the lift. Steering is by tilting of the rotors.
I wonder if they could be used for herding cattle or docile aliens. They'd be easier to produce on a new planetary colony.
The thing is, I thought there was a hint of them having been used in a recent book or movie (earth bound). Does anyone here know of such a thing?
