Choose one object for the scene you're working on - how can you relate that object to the novel's theme?
I just described the origin story for the pencils Ron sketches with, imported in 1920 from the Republic of Sarawak, crafted by a family of master craftsmen. Ron's reliance on the pencils contrasts the novel's theme of improvising when the usual rules no longer work. Isadora wonders why Ron can't make do with any old pencil. Ron feels like he cannot change his habit.
